John Bell papers, 1824-1838.

Four generations of the Bell family were land surveyors in England. This collection contains personal and business correspondence of John Bell, land surveyor of the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway, living in Wind Mill Hills, Gateshead, England. Most of the letters are dated 1824-1825 and include personal correspondence with his sons, George Grey Bell and John Thomas William Bell. Also included is an invitation to the opening of the railroad line between Redheugh and Carlisle on June 18th, 1838.

John Bell was born in Newcastle on 7 October 1783, first son of John Bell (1755-1816), a land surveyor and bookseller, and Margaret, the daughter of John Gray of Combfield House, co. Durham. He married Barbara, the daughter of Thomas Pringle of Newcastle, on 22 November 1806; they had nine children. His brother was Thomas Bell (1785-1860), land surveyor and book collector.
